You have a chance to play with a symphonic orchestra on Saturday, when the Oak Ridge Community Orchestra has an open rehearsal at the Secret City Festival.
The open rehearsal is scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, June 11.
“This means you can show up unannounced, with your instrument and music stand, slide into a vacant chair, and play along on any pieces you like,” a press release said. “Because it is a rehearsal atmosphere, you will not feel pressured to crank out a stellar performance.”
Why does the ORCO offer an open rehearsal?
“We have two motivations,” the press release said. “Often, people who sample playing in the orchestra decide they like it, and join ORCO to continue their enjoyment, while augmenting their experience and musical skills. For accomplished students, it offers an opportunity to find out what it is like to play in an ensemble populated with strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion.
“Whatever your motivation, don’t resist the temptation to join us for the open rehearsal. You can find us at the Secret City Festival, under the oak trees, at the northeast corner of the Oak Ridge Civic Center, near the High School crosswalk traffic light on the Oak Ridge Turnpike. We will have chairs set up adjacent to the Oak Ridge Community Arts booth for the rehearsal from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday.”
If June 11 does not work for you, but you are still interested in exploring the Oak Ridge Community Orchestra, contact Personnel Manager Cyndi Jeffers per the information below.
Normally, the ORCO rehearses from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturdays at the First Baptist Church of Oak Ridge.
The Oak Ridge Community Orchestra is a 501(c)3, nonprofit, volunteer organization, performing under the baton of Conductor and Music Director Marcelo Urias. Anyone wishing to regularly participate in the orchestra is encouraged to contact Jeffers at [email protected].
“Usually, we can accommodate additional string players, and occasionally there are openings in the brass, woodwind, and percussion sections,” the press release said. “The orchestra welcomes experienced musicians of all ages. The Oak Ridge Community Orchestra is a rewarding venue for instrumentalists who enjoy playing for an appreciative audience, with music ranging from Baroque through Classical to Contemporary.”
