ORISE is currently accepting applications for the 2016 Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship Program, or MLEF, which is a 10-week summer program for students pursuing degrees in science, technology, engineering, and math.
The MLEF Program provides students who are U.S. citizens with the opportunity to gain and develop research skills by training under the mentorship of program officials and scientists within the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Fossil Energy. This program is open to currently enrolled full-time degree-seeking students in a science, technology, engineering, or math (STEM) program at an accredited college or university at the bachelor’s (sophomore or higher), master’s, or doctoral level with a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
Participants will support Office of Fossil Energy mission-related research while gaining insight into how DOE is working to meet the energy challenges of the future. Although all eligible candidates are encouraged to apply, the goal of the program is to improve the opportunities for women and minority students in the STEM fields.
The summer program may place students at one of several possible sites, including:
- Department of Energy Headquarters, Washington, D.C., and Germantown, Maryland
- National Energy Technology Laboratory, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Morgantown, West Virginia; Albany, Oregon
- Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR), New Orleans, Louisiana.; and other SPR sites in Louisiana and Texas
- Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, Richland, Washington
- Sandia National Laboratory, Livermore, California
- Los Alamos National Lab, Los Alamos, New Mexico
- Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Berkeley, California
The MLEF Program offers the following benefits:
- Direct exposure to and participation in research on DOE mission-relevant research areas
- Hands-on research experience and training under the mentorship of program officials and scientists
- Stipends range from $600-$850 week (depending on academic status) plus limited housing and travel reimbursement
- Opportunities to present research at program-sponsored poster session

The Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship program is administered through the U.S. Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE).
ORISE is a U.S. Department of Energy institute focusing on scientific initiatives to research health risks from occupational hazards, assess environmental cleanup, respond to radiation medical emergencies, support national security and emergency preparedness, and educate the next generation of scientists. ORISE is managed by ORAU.
