A man pleaded guilty on Wednesday in Knoxville to killing a former Anderson County Jail employee during an armed robbery outside a Knoxville credit union in December 2010.
Brandon Johnson pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, aggravated robbery, and other charges and was sentenced to 45 years in prison with no early release in the shooting death of 46-year-old Davida Nicholson.
The incident occurred as Nicholson and her 21-year-old mentally challenged son were parked at an ATM withdrawing Christmas shopping money when Johnson approached armed with two pistols and demanded her cash.
When Nicholson tried to drive away, Johnson shot her at close range in the chest, a wound that proved fatal.
He then opened fire on other bank patrons in the parking lot, missing his mark, before reaching into Nicholson’s truck and pulling her son out of the cab and getting in.
That is where Knoxville Police found him upon their arrival, at which time they ordered him to drop his weapons and get out of the vehicle. Johnson ignored those orders and was shot once, suffering a minor injury to his neck.
