Harold DeWillis Cofer, age 85, of Oak Ridge, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 11, at NHC Health Care Center.
He was born May 24, 1927, in Chattanooga, the son of Tincie Murphy Cofer and Paul W. Cofer Sr.
Mr. Cofer was a member of the 1943 Class of Oak Ridge High School. He was a veteran of World War II, serving as a Seabee with the U.S. Navy.
Mr. Cofer was a longtime member of Highland View Church of Christ. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed playing at Centennial Golf Course and the Oak Ridge Country Club.
In earlier years, he served on the Board of Zoning Appeals and on the Oak Ridge Planning Commission. Mr. Cofer enjoyed sharing his role in the history of the early years at the Y-12 plant.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Harriet Hawkins Cofer; son, Keith E. Cofer and wife Kim of Karns; daughters, Nancy C. Witick and husband Ken, and Susan Mullins Scrimsher, all of Oak Ridge, and Faye McCullough and husband Tom of Chattanooga; brothers, Paul W. Cofer Jr. of Knoxville and Marvin A. Cofer of Eden Prairie, Minn.; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
The family received friends Thursday, Sept. 13, from 6–8 p.m. at Highland View Church of Christ.
The funeral will be Friday at 2 p.m. at the church with Curtis McClane and Ray Smith officiating.
The interment will follow at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. His grandchildren will serve as pallbearers. Military honors will be provided by the U.S. Navy Honor Guard.
