‘Let Them Eat Cupcakes!’ play reading at Library Saturday

As part of the Secret City Festival, Oak Ridge Revitalization Effort will present a free reading of Oak Ridge playwright Leslie Agron’s new play “Let Them Eat Cupcakes!”

The reading will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Oak Ridge Public Library Auditorium.

Council cuts spending on lobbyists by $83K

The Oak Ridge City Council has unanimously agreed to cut the amount spent each year on state and federal lobbying in Nashville and Washington, D.C., by about $83,000.

Pay for the federal lobbying firm, The Ferguson Group of Washington, D.C., will be reduced from $102,000 per year to $30,000–at an hourly rate of $425 per hour. Once the firm reaches the $30,000 cap, the city manager would have to approve extra hours.

Council approves security upgrades to Police Department

A quarter-million dollars worth of security upgrades to the Oak Ridge Police Department were approved in a 6-1 vote by City Council members this week.

Council approved a $277,000 contract with Richardson Turner Construction Company of Knoxville and agreed to add $20,000 to a professional services agreement with Bankston Architectural Group of Knoxville.

Shirley Bradshaw, age 84, of Jacksboro, passed away Wednesday, June 13, at Methodist Medical Center in Oak Ridge.

Shirley was a Godly woman, prayer warrior, and was a member of Calvary Temple Worship Center in Harriman. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great–great grandmother.

Lady Vols coach helps ORNL kick off United Way drive

University of Tennessee Lady Vols Head Coach Holly Warlick, left, congratulates Belinda Loi, an Oak Ridge National Laboratory student intern, and Jason Craig, ORNL scientific glass blower, after a free throw competition Thursday.

Oak Ridge National Laboratory is already one of the United Way’s largest regional contributors, and officials said they hope to raise even more money this year.

“You’d be amazed at the difference that even $10 a week can make,” Hurtis Hodges, ORNL United Way campaign chairman said during a Thursday morning ceremony on the lab’s Main Street.

Tennessee Lady Vols Head Coach Holly Warlick helped ORNL kick off its annual United Way campaign with a short speech and free-throw competition.

Battle for Secret City Greenway is Sunday

Proceeds from a new 4.2-mile greenway run and walk will be used to install benches on local trails.

The first annual Battle for the Secret City Greenway starts Sunday near the Oak Ridge Rowing Association Boathouse and ends at the west end of Haw Ridge Park.

Board to consider demolition of Tuskegee Drive warehouse

An Oak Ridge board will consider whether to order the demolition of a warehouse on Tuskegee Drive this afternoon.

The city staff has recommended that the building at 400 Tuskegee Drive be declared unfit and either repaired or demolished within 30 days, and that trash and debris be cleaned up with 10 days of the hearing.

ORNL microscopy reveals workings behind inexpensive catalyst

Electron microscopy at Oak Ridge National Laboratory confirmed that a carbon nanotube material that exhibits desirable chemical properties has many heavy atoms, such as the iron atoms circled in red. (Photo submitted by ORNL)

A team of researchers that included scientists from Oak Ridge National Laboratory has developed an inexpensive carbon nanotube material that could help lower the cost of fuel cells and catalytic converters.

The new material could provide a substitute for expensive platinum catalysts.
